Shauna is an emerging artist with immense promise. She was the winner of the 2010 Bricolage Prize for environmentally friendly arts practice, and has just received the JUMP Mentorship Program, Australia Council’s national mentoring program for young and emerging artists with mentor Julie Blyfield. Last year receiving the Roger Walker Mentorship, an Arts Tasmania Funded Mentorship Program with Master Gem Setter Roger Walker. Her work is gaining much attention, recently being part of a story on sustainable practice in InDESIGN magazine Design For The Soul (Surry Hills NSW p.211), and featured in I Sleep In Haystacks & Corners – a new publication by Inscrutable Press, Hobart Tasmania AUS.
Of her work, Shauna notes “I have a love and a fascination with the pre loved. I collect tin type photos from the 19th century, old Australian silver coins, love tokens and Victorian hair Jewellery. (Made from human hair) I incorporate all of these things into my Jewellery pieces.”
“Objects tell a story. They capture a sliver of the past; they transport a moment in time. These objects have all been pre loved, and lost along the way. I make room for them to sit inside my jewellery, waiting to be found again.”
“I am fascinated with making containers to house these objects in the form of lockets, book lockets and frames.”
