Desiree Fitzgibbon - Paintings and Mixed Media
For the past six years I have lived on the shore of a beach, a place which has completely captured my heart. In an ever increasingly demanding life, returning home has become the still point of grace.
I listen to the silences and the winds on the sea. I hone my senses to the weathers, to the changes in topography, to the skies and atmospheres - to the birds, insects and four legged critters, to the song of the dolphins - and the music of their patterns of behavior. Here I have learned what it means to speak of My Place.
Life is simple on the periphery. Daily awareness of the pull of the moon on the tides, the seasonal return of birds, native bees in my garden-the vernacular of my place is captured on the cloths I saturate with earth pigments, honey, beeswax, ink and clay. Stitching the cloth is a gesture of mending the torn fabric of our world, the thread maps the space with memory and a longing to retrieve something lost. Tracks weave their peregrinations across the sand, across the cloths - as heartbeats marking time.
The paintings are a litany, an opus to the genius loci; homage offered in gratitude for the privilege of being a caretaker of this small patch of blessed earth where I live.
