Peter Battaglene - Ceramics

Peter is a career potter who has been working with ceramics and porcelain for over a decade. He has trained extensively in both art and design and runs his own ceramic design business, Watermark Pottery. His on-going research into the simplicity of form and refinement of shape and design has been informed by the clean minimalist aesthetic of Japan and Scandinavia. Yet Peter has worked to create his own signature style that is beautiful in its simplicity and quietly urbane.

Peter’s mastery of ceramics has allowed him to create challenging and unique pieces with a sophisticated contemporary edge. With an emphasis on function his forms are simple and robust enough to be used everyday as well as having that “something special” which elevates them to museum and collection pieces.

Peter has developed a unique decorating technique to embellish his surfaces. With the use of paper stencils and resisting agents, geometric patterns are layered onto the surface. As Peter says, “the ambiguous nature of the decorative device shifts the focus from the shape forming the pattern to the spaces in-between.” The humble polka dot transcends the ordinary and reaches new artistic heights in the hands of this expert technician.
