Jane Bamford -
I was born in Tasmania and feel inspired by wild landscapes. In 1992 I spent a year walking in the Himalayan Mountains and then lived in Japan. I worked with Japanese potters who fired a traditional anagama kiln. Being in Asia gave me a strong appreciation of the utilitarian object and the role it plays in the lives of people. At university I developed an interest in using industrial techniques to produce work in a studio environment. At the Jam Factory I continued this mode of production and was able to experiment with different materials such as metal, glass and paper.
I work mainly in porcelain because of its properties of translucency and longevity and for its clean tactile quality. I like to produce functional work and also play with surfaces and form which reflect what I see in nature.
