Melissa Smith - printmaker
During the last seventeen years Smith has participated in a number of solo and numerous group exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. In 2004 and 2006 she won the Tasmanian Art Award and has been a finalist in major art prizes including the Fremantle Print Award, Silkcut Print Award, Alice Prize, Hutchins Art Prize, Burnie Print Prize, Rena Ellen Jones Memorial Print Award, Sunshine Coast Art Prize, Banyule Works on Paper Art Award and the Outback Prize. Her work was acquired in 2011 in the Silkcut Print Award and in 2012 in the Fremantle Print Prize.
In 2005 and 2011 Smith was selected by the Print Council of Australia to produce a commissioned Member’s print, both of which remain part of the PCA Collection. Her work is represented in Corporate, Tertiary, College and Private collections in Australia and overseas, and in the following Public galleries; National Gallery of Australia, ACT; Burnie Regional Gallery, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, TAS; Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, Grafton Regional Gallery, Tweed River Regional Art Gallery, NSW and the Warrnambool Art Gallery, VIC.
My prints has always referenced aspects of the landscape and in particular the shifts in the landscape that have occurred as a consequence of climatic changes. The work identifies with the tilt on our land, its elements and questions its future balance.
