Frances Watkins - sculptor

I was born in Tasmania in 1962 to an Australian mother and Chinese father, and brought up in both cultures with a diverse and rich family history on both sides.

A love of figurative art began as a child. At the age of ten I lived in London with my family for twelve months. That year was spent visiting museums and art galleries. A favourite of mine was the Victoria and Albert Museum, where they have a cast of Michelangelo’s David. I was in awe of this sculpture and visited again and again.

I studied medicine at the University of Tasmania and developed a fascination for the study of anatomy. My work as a doctor has taught me a lot about people and given me insights into the human spirit.

My own work in sculpture began in 2003 when I began figurative and portrait sculpture. I also took courses in life drawing and water colour. I work in oil-based clay for casting in bronze. Bronze is a wonderful medium that carries form, light and energy. It has a permanence and weight which brings much to study of the human form.

Working in bronze has also led to an exploration of patinas. I want to develop patinas to reflect the mood and energy of the sculptures, Too often bronze patinas are predictable, and I want to change this.

I have a fascination and love for the human form and for humanity, and through the artistic study of the human figure I aim to portray emotion, the strength, the beauty and the resilience of the human spirit.
