Betsy Gamble - Printmaker

Betsy Gamble, Tasmania's beloved printmaker, died in June 2001. She will be remembered for her significant contribution to the arts in Tasmania, for her printmaking, her generosity, and her quirky sense of humour. She was an unassuming person, clever and cryptic, and witty in her expression and in her thoughts. This is captured in her inspiring artwork.

After graduating with a Diploma of Art Teaching at Hobart Technical College in 1958, Betsy embarked on a career of teaching art. She returned to art school in 1981 and studied printmaking. From this point she never looked back.

Betsy's prints are about life - love, pain, mothering, community, the natural and the suburban environment - a philosophical view of life as lived through personal experience. Words were very important to her, and often came before imagery. She drew contmporary meaning from traditional textx and themes. This strong content, together with her technical skill, use of light and colour, and whimsy gave her work quiet strength.
