Brady's Oriel
Cocked Hat lies on the property, Mt Oriel at Breadalbane. The accompanying folklore tells the story of Matthew Brady, the infamous bushranger, using the hill as his vantage point enabling him to evade capture. Brady could see the movements of those around him from such points - although it is said that that he was eventually captured on that very hill along with his distinctive cocked hat. The hill is richly layered with memory and history as well as its geological structure. There is a blue stone quarry beneath the hill, rich in resources - the stone is carved, cut and carried away.
