Bert Aperloo - Printmaker

Litho stone, aluminium dry point etching, and recently woodcuts, are my preferred print medium choice as a printmaker and my detailed mark making has become a dominant feature in my work. My images are often symbolic and emotionally charged, using colour and the print medium itself to convey feelings and emotions.

Migration has played a major part in shaping my life. It is of particular significance to me - I was born in Holland and later lived and worked in South Africa before migrating to Australia.

I use the Dutch national flower to symbolize various family members. The framed woodcut print of a Double Circus tulip, emerging menacingly out of darkness, symbolizes the volatile personality traits of my father. I have contrasted this with the litho and dry point print of a mysterious looking Roccoco Parrot tulip with leaves, bursting joyfully out of light, to portray my mother’s loving persona.

Also included is a self-portrait, depicted by a blue ‘Dutch Fair’ tulip behind a frosted window, symbolizing the entrapment and loneliness I felt as a child. The same tulip is also printed in red by itself to symbolize the excitement and freedom felt when migrating to South Africa.
