FOREST COMPOSITIONS
My work reflects my engagement with the Tasmanian environment.
‘Forest Compositions’ refer to the landscape / forest, and the life force that is imbued into the works, which are made through meditative processes of collecting materials from trees and extracting their colours.
In some works mysterious, deep and dark forest pools reflect leaves and fragments of trees in others the light shines between tree trunks or through the forests’ canopy.
I collect leaves, flowers and bark from the native trees on my land and extract their essence, not unlike in an alchemical process, through a long process of boiling and adding mordants. The paper is folded, rolled or tied before being submerged and boiled into the dye bath. Several baths are used to overlay different layers of colour and to develop subtle surfaces on the paper; the resulting luminous golden yellows, rich browns and deep black colourings are then used as base colours to paint, draw and /or print over.
