My work is fundamentally about an interest in drawing. Working exclusively with charcoal and pastel, and mostly large in scale, my drawings refer to many years of academic grounding in experimenting with printmaking techniques (layering, inversion and tonal values - to name a few), old black and white photography, the Chinese shan shui style of ink painting, and techniques of film composition. Crucial also is my response to many rich and varied psychological and metaphysical experiences of spending time on a remote and isolated island located off the southeast coast of Tasmania. I visit this island each year as a way to forget about everyday life and try to find myself again...

The poetics of nothing |
The work in Afloat comes from my experience of the littoral and coastal zones in Tasmania. I have drawn from my trips in kayaks, keel boats and dinghies and walks along the shores, beaches and rocky coastlines, finding natural objects or rocks and discovering their textures and patterns. Following the shape of paddle and craft, cross patterns of nets and ropes, enjoying the water beads on deck and observations like the depth of colour changes when leaving the shore. But also the quality of the clear water is here. And the wonder of the plants that inhabit the shorelines and the feelings that dwell inside when time is spent in these places....
